Summer Reading

Posted at 10:09 AM on June 05, 2009

Ah summertime is almost here and according to an old song, the living is supposed to be easy. The weather is getting warmer.  Spring has sprung and school is almost over. Which means that Jordan will be trotting in here on the last day of school with her progress report in one hand and a summer packet of homework an inch thick, as mandated by New York City Board of Ed. So much for the living is easy. Last year, we were blessed with a daily journal, 10 book reports and at least 25 worksheets. I can hardly wait to see what's in store for us this year.

Being the good parent that I am, we spent the end of June, all of July and 3/4 of August, playing, swimming, a nd hanging. She learned how to play golf, took tennis baseball and swimming. We went to four water parks (our not so secret obsession. What we didn't do until August 23rd is homework because who wants to do that?

The one thing that we did every where though is read.  We read on buses trains and automobiles going everywhere.  We both read at the beach, the library, bookstores and in the park. When other kids whipped out their video games, Jordan kept her video playing to a minimum and her nose in a book. This paid off for us for a variety of reasons because first of all, there are some great reading programs out there. Target, Borders Books and Barnes Nobles gave us books. Our local library gave us incentive credits. A movie chain gave us free passes to movies.

More important than that, Jordan hit the ground running in first grade and maintained a straight A average and for those you on the leveled reading game, she is at level P.  So whether or not you are, umm blessed with, with a homework packet or not, please enjoy our list of Summer Reading Programs.

What We Are Reading:

We finished Morgy's musical summer by Maggie Lewis and we had so much fun with it that we both want to check out the rest of the series.  A new American Girl doll came out last week, along with 6 new books.  Jordan's on her third book in the Rebecca series.

Rebecca and Ana
Rebecca and Ana
by Jacqueline Dunbar Greene

Rebecca's cousin, Ana, has made the journey from Russia to Ellis Island. Rebecca happily shares her world with Ana until she must include her in her shining moment at school.

Tabatha Says:  The second book in a 6 book series, it perfectly captures themes that middlegrade readers of today deal with by exploring early 20th century issues, particularly the challenges of immigrants.
Jordan Says:  I like it because says alot about friendship
